Meet our researchers - Alex Laverick

Exploring DNA Data Structures with Our New EnDROIDS Researcher

Please meet our new researcher, Alex, who joined our EnDROIDS team in September 2024.

Alex’s career began in agricultural research as a field technician, which led him to pursue an undergraduate degree in Biology at Aberystwyth University. A guest lecture on synthetic biology and the iGEM competition sparked his interest in the field, leading him to obtain a Master’s degree with distinction in Synthetic Biology at Newcastle University, followed by a PhD focused on creating environmental sensing biomaterials for early disease detection in crops.

As part of the EnDROIDS team, Alex is working on dynamic DNA storage structures. His research involves mimicking computer science data structures, such as stacks and queues, using DNA for long-term data storage.

For Alex, science is more than just a career; it’s a particular way of thinking and exploring the world. As he put it, “I have questions I want answered, and science is the vehicle through which I haphazardly drive to achieve them.” To Alex, science isn’t always predictable or straightforward and experiments often yield unexpected results. In this way, being a researcher in academia allows him the freedom to pursue new questions and nurture his curiosity.

In his free time, Alex loves hosting Dungeons and Dragons games, reading books and video games.
