Yasir Akbar - Biosecurity Research Assistant

Biosecurity Implications of DNA data storage

I am M. Yasir Akbar, a Research Assistant in School of Computing at Newcastle University, where I specialize in Bioinformatics Biosecurity. I have completed my M.Phil in Bioinformatics and have 2 years past professional experience at National Institute for Genomics and Advanced Biotechnology (NIGAB), Islamabad, Pakistan.

As a bioinformatician, I am responsible for applying computational techniques to analyse the biological data in the context of genomics, synthetic biology and biosecurity. My primary focus will be genome analysis, phylogenetics, scanning of synthetic DNA, barcoding, traceability and -crucially- the biosecurity implications of DNA data storage.

I use multiple bioinformatics tools and algorithms to interpret complex datasets, which enables the extraction of meaningful insights that supports experiments.

This work is important for ensuring the safety of genetic modifications as well as the security of information stored in DNA molecules.
